Wood naturally adjusts its moisture content to match the surrounding air humidity — and if that humidity is uncontrolled, the result is warping, cracking, swelling, and quality failures during production. Wood is hygroscopic — it continuously absorbs and releases moisture until it reaches equilibrium with the surrounding air. In an uncontrolled storage environment, fluctuating relative humidity causes seasonal changes in wood moisture content, leading to dimensional instability, surface cracking, and warping that creates problems during machining, finishing, and assembly.
For furniture production, timber should be stored at a moisture content of 8–9%. For doors and windows, the target is around 12%. Maintaining these levels requires a stable indoor climate year-round — something ventilation alone cannot reliably provide.
