Sawn timber is highly sensitive to moisture. Wood naturally adjusts its moisture content to match the surrounding air humidity â and if that humidity is uncontrolled, the result is warping, cracking, swelling, and quality failures during production. DST desiccant dehumidifiers maintain a stable, controlled indoor climate in timber stores and wood workshops, ensuring that sawn wood reaches the production line at the correct moisture content, every time.
Wood is hygroscopic â it continuously absorbs and releases moisture until it reaches equilibrium with the surrounding air. In an uncontrolled storage environment, fluctuating relative humidity causes seasonal changes in wood moisture content, leading to dimensional instability, surface cracking, and warping that creates problems during machining, finishing, and assembly.
For furniture production, timber should be stored at a moisture content of 8â9%. For doors and windows, the target is around 12%. Maintaining these levels requires a stable indoor climate year-round â something ventilation alone cannot reliably provide. DST dehumidifiers hold the indoor climate at the correct dew point, ensuring consistent timber quality from intake to production regardless of outdoor conditions.
See how DST desiccant systems maintain stable moisture conditions in timber stores, sawmill storage halls, and wood workshops. Our RECUSORB dehumidifiers use heat recovery technology and can be powered by steam, electricity, gas, or hot water â making them an energy-efficient solution for year-round timber conditioning.
DST supplied drying kiln dehumidification and wood workshop humidity control for DEROME, one of Sweden’s leading timber and construction companies, across two project phases.
DST installed timber storage dehumidification for Pölkky Oy at their Kuusamo facility, maintaining stable moisture conditions in sawn wood storage ahead of processing and dispatch.
DST supplied both timber storage and workshop dehumidification for Nakashima, protecting high-value wood stock and maintaining stable conditions during fine furniture production.
DST has been supplying wood storage dehumidification to the timber and furniture industry since 1992 â across sawmills, storage halls, drying kilns, and production workshops in Scandinavia, Europe, and North America. All systems can be specified for the required moisture setpoint, storage volume, and energy source.
