Desiccant cooling system has been used in commercial application for over 30 years in Hong Kong. While one of the main purposes of applying desiccant cooling system is to adopt “active humidity control” approach which is one of the best drivers in achieving sustainable indoor air quality (IAQ) with the improvement of overall mechanical system efficiency.

To maintain the temperature as well as to control the indoor humidity, the common solution is to cool down the supply air stream below its dew point followed by a reheating process. However, this methodology will require colder chilled water which will decrease the chiller efficiency. In view of this, to control the temperature and humidity separately by means of a desiccant based cooling system can avoid excessive cooling as the latent load is actively controlled by the desiccant. Furthermore, the saving in cooling energy is significant when the sensible load is not at its peak and the sensible heat ratio is low.
