SORPTINSAVFUKTNING I SJÖFARTSINDUSTRIN

Protecting Cargo, Vessels and Equipment

At sea, moisture is everywhere — and its effects on cargo quality, vessel integrity, and equipment reliability are severe. Condensation in cargo holds damages hygroscopic goods. Salt-laden humid air accelerates corrosion on structural components, machinery, and electrical systems. DST desiccant dehumidifiers provide reliable humidity control across the full range of maritime environments — from cargo holds and chemical tankers to shipyard surface treatment operations and vessel lay-up preservation.

Moisture at Sea — a Persistent Threat to Cargo and Vessel Integrity

As a vessel moves through changing climates, the temperature of the air inside cargo holds and enclosed spaces fluctuates. When warm, humid air cools — for example, as a ship moves from tropical to colder waters — its relative humidity rises sharply, often reaching saturation point. The resulting condensation, known as “cargo sweat” or “ship sweat”, drips onto stored goods, causing moisture damage that can make entire shipments unfit for sale.

For the vessel itself, the combination of salt and humidity creates one of the most corrosive environments on earth. Structural steelwork, pipe systems, machinery rooms, and electrical enclosures are all vulnerable. During lay-up or refurbishment periods, when vessels are inactive and not generating heat, the risk is at its highest.

DST dehumidifiers remove moisture from the air inside holds and enclosed spaces continuously, maintaining the stable low-humidity conditions that protect both cargo and vessel — from loading port to destination.
